PAFC Pick 'Em Results - Week 8

OK, this is more like it!

First of all, props to JerrilynnL and MichelleB for rockin' this week after, well, a tough start...

Anyway, Derek is rolling and Morganna is right behind him. Like I said, this is more like it as I am falling out of the top - because I suck at this!

PAFC Newsletter 10.24.06

Wow, where did THIS come from?

Flutter-flutter! The next big plastic surgery craze is – eyelash transplants! Um, yeah. I can’t tell you how many times me and the guys were hanging out, checking out women, and one of us said, "Dude, she is pretty hot – nice rack and all – but her eyelashes just aren’t doing it for me!"

In Philly, of course! A dad pulled a gun on his son’s football coach because the 6-year-old kid wasn’t getting enough playing time. OK, I’m sure this could happen anywhere – sorry! However, I am using this as a segue to discuss Friday Night Lights. I kinda like the show, but I thought the parents were a little over the top. Now I’ve changed my mind. Yikes!

Pulling out! Porn star Mary Carey in California (go figure) is no longer running for governor. Her mother in Florida forgot to take her crazy pills and jumped off a building, shattering her feet, legs, vertebrae, and illusions that she was helicopter girl. The "actress" said it was a miracle her mother lived. She also wasn’t officially on the ballot, but voters were welcome to pencil her in, if ya know what I mean!

Principal Sluggo! The principal of Park High School in Montana has just returned to work, suspended for giving a student a wedgie. "It has been clearly recognized and stated that the behavior is inappropriate, unprofessional and unacceptable," said Superintendent Hannibal Anderson, and then he ate him.

Gimme another dollar – I’ma win that KID! Yeah, another toddler crawled up into one of those vending machines where you try to pick up stuffed animals with a springy, prongy thingy. Mom and grandma were somehow proud, completely oblivious to how negligent they were and what a waste of taxpayer’s money is involved in the fire department coming to break your kid out of a vending machine:

"I told him I could get it for him," his grandmother said. "He's a character. He said, 'Oh no, I can get it. I turned around and looked for him, and he said, 'Oma, I'm in here,' - I thought I would have a heart attack. He was having a ball in there, hugging all the stuffed animals. He was so good-natured, but I was shaking like a leaf."

Bad ape! An ape in Iowa has been scolded for pulling a fire alarm. Also, she no longer is allowed to pull lice off of her fellow apes, but she’s still allowed to fling her poo.

Tomkat to WED! Finally! All 4 of you who care, please get off my blog – NOW!

Shocking! Claudia Schiffer thinks that models are too thin! In related news, Terrell Owens says that athletes are too boisterous, and Ashlee Simpson firmly believes that there are too many pop stars that have no talent.

Finally, THIS makes me laugh out loud every time I view it!

Birthday Boy!

Yeah, so my dad's birthday was last weekend. He got new undies, and was very excited!

Happy birthday, Toe Toe!

...And you wonder where I get it from?

PAFC Pick 'Em Results - Week 7

Werd to Matt and Squatchy for pulling 9's this week.

Hey, am I still leading? Guh! This can't last! Derek is knocking on the door, and Dejo is, well, not - yet. I wonder how Morgan would do if her dad DIDN'T pick for her?

Wacky Video Wednesday!

Hey, Freak Train is coming up on Monday the 30th! This would be a good night to see what the hell happens at the Bug Theatre each month, being it's Halloween and the freaks get even freakier! Speaking of, I may be in more than one little skit!

My OTHER point, is this video here - it's from former Freak Train hostess Ashley! This is why she went to Chicago - to make silly videos such as this:

See you on Monday!

Do You Have a Few Minutes?

I really don't want to beat this issue too much, but I'm finding Nancy Grace to be absolutely disturbing! So I've gathered a little bit of text and video evidence of what a complete moron and inappropriate #$&% she is:

1) Here is the complete text of Stephen King’s article from EW a few weeks ago. This, along with a few skits in SNL and Studio 60, is what got me curious in watching her show to see what she was really like:

Graceless and Tasteless

Stephen King on Nancy Grace -- The Pop of King dissects the controversial news anchor by Stephen King

I'm sure Ron Williamson, of Ada, Okla., would have been Nancy Grace's dream case if she'd been on TV at the time of his arrest and subsequent trial for the murder of Debra Sue Carter; I mean, we're talking years of prime-time steak and chops, all culminating with Williamson being sentenced to death by lethal injection. The only problem is that Ron Williamson didn't do the crime. You can read all about it in John Grisham's extraordinary new nonfiction account of the case, The Innocent Man.

I've known John for 12 years, and beneath the kidding, ''I'm just a good ole boy'' exterior, there's a hardworking guy who believes in God, honesty, and the law. Maybe in that order, maybe not. And when I mentioned Nancy Grace in his presence, a look of discomfort, bordering on pain, came over his face. When I asked if he'd let me quote him for this piece, he said he can't stand to watch her.

Ron Williamson went through the horrors of the damned, and he's been much on my mind the last couple of weeks as I force-fed myself doses of Ms. Grace, the Darth Vader of CNN Headline News (which, like this magazine, is owned by Time Warner). And before you accuse me of writing about news in your favorite entertainment magazine, let me assure you that Nancy Grace is entertainment...if, that is, you're the sort who watches NASCAR for the crashes and Survivor hoping no one will. In the increasingly weird world of infotainment, she is the belle of the Freakers Ball.

Nancy Grace — puffy-cheeked, helmet-haired, heavy-lidded, strangely expressionless even during her frequent rages — conveys by body language alone the idea that we're all guilty of something...and she knows it. Her specialty is the sorts of tabloid crimes The National Enquirer used to cover in the bad old days, when car-crash photos and Mexican decapitations were staples. George Pelecanos, James Ellroy, and Michael Connelly are able to elevate such horrors to art; Nancy Grace degrades them so deeply into the fleapit of the imagination that a week of her makes Dick Cheney highlight reels look good. And like Puritan elders, Wild West hanging judges, or Madame Defarge knitting in the shadow of the guillotine, Nancy Grace gives the sense that somehow, someway, she just knows whodunit.

But not even veteran Grace watchers could have been prepared for this autumn's spectacular, when Ms. Grace kicked around the dead body of Melinda Duckett for either 30 or 60 minutes a night, depending on who else in this great land of ours was being stabbed, raped, or abducted.

Just in case you're one of the six who haven't heard: Trenton Duckett is or was (probably was) the 2-year-old son of Josh and Melinda Duckett, separated. Trenton was living with his mother in Leesburg, Fla. On Aug. 27, she called 911 at approximately 9 p.m. to report Trenton missing. When the police arrived, they found the screen of his bedroom window slashed. A search netted no result. The boy's father was questioned, then passed a polygraph (not that anyone really does; read The Innocent Man). And, inevitably, suspicion began to swing toward Mom.

Enter Nancy Grace. It's hard to tell if Melinda Duckett knew of Grace's penchant for ambush interviewing, or her seeming fantasy life as Perry Mason in a pink power suit; if she didn't, she found out. Grace repeatedly asked, while overriding Duckett's attempts to answer: ''Have you taken a polygraph?'' (Her lawyer told her not to.) ''Where were you?'' she later trumpeted, pounding on her desk. ''Why aren't you telling us where you were that day?'' The next day, Melinda Duckett crawled into her grandfather's closet and blew her head off with his shotgun. She had to be identified by an arm tattoo. Anyone with the smallest shred of decency would not have run that pre-suicide interview, but Nancy Grace isn't just anyone. She ran it — with a small graphic at the bottom of the screen saying Melinda Duckett's body had been found that afternoon.

If Trenton Duckett is dead, Nancy Grace is in the grotesque position of having to hope Mom did it. If not, the part Grace may have played in Duckett's death is almost beyond thinking about. If Duckett did kill Trenton (the police now call her the prime suspect), she's beyond the reach of the law and of no further help in finding the boy's body and easing the agony of his father or of his grieving relatives, and Ms. Grace almost certainly bears a responsibility for that, though she denies it.

Her network supported her decision to run the pre-suicide interview. The reason for that is in the numbers. Cable news is a Nielsen yard sale, but even so, sleaze sells. According to the AP, the death of Melinda Duckett (and the probable death of Trenton) has been good business for CNN Headline News and Nancy Grace. In recent months, Grace had been doing 534,000 viewers per night. In the days after Duckett's death, the show averaged 689,000.

One politics-and-business blog calls this ''the dead mother bounce.'' I call it ugly and shameful. As journalism it's immoral, and as entertainment, it's outright pimpery. Thirty-five years ago I wrote a novel called The Running Man, in which viewers watched fugitives run until they were executed on national television. I never expected to see anything remotely like it for real, but I never imagined Nancy Grace...and I've got a pretty nasty imagination.

No wonder John Grisham doesn't watch her.

(Posted:09/29/06) (Source: Entertainment Weekly)

2) Grace aired her interview with Melinda Duckett. Now remember, this is a woman whose child has been abducted. I know she’s a suspect, but she was also cooperating with the police and doing everything they asked of her. Grace still aired her interview with this woman knowing full and well that Melinda committed suicide the day before the interview was scheduled to air. This absolutely disgusts me! A panel discussion on her lack of morals and common sense, including some clips of her original interview with Duckett:

3) Here is Nancy defending herself on the Good Morning America, unconvincingly:

4) I randomly watched Grace a few nights ago, and she was STILL pounding on the issue of this abducted child by interviewing the father. Not only has she forced the main suspect and only person who might know what really happened to kill herself, but she just won’t let the thing go! Isn’t there something else to talk about?

5) To prove what a complete imbecile she is, watch this interview with Elizabeth Smart, the girl who was abducted in Utah. Ms. Smart is there solely to discuss a new law to help prevent such abductions, but Nancy keeps pushing the wrong issues – asking questions like, “Now, they had you wear a burka – how did you see out of that thing? (Giggle)” The end of this video is the kicker, as in kick in the face to Elizabeth Smart for coming on the show!

6) What Nancy needs to hear more often:

Did she go too far? Should she still be on the air? Isn’t there something better to watch?

30 Rock Bounces Back

Yeah, I ripped on the pilot episode last week. But the second episode of 30 Rock was about, well, 30 times better than the first!

Maybe Tina needed to set up the show in the first, but this episode took off. Alec Baldwin is damn funny; Jane Krakowski is brilliant; Tracy Morgan is perfect in this role; random cameos from Rachel Dratch are priceless already.

Thank you, Tina, for bringing the comedy I was hoping for and expecting from you!

Stupid Fun

Whatever!

I know, I haven't touched my blog in a week, Bob Lob Law...

I'm not going to bitch about working too much again, because people I work with read this every now and then so that's not an excuse.

Annoyances of the week:

  • NBA pre-season highlights on ESPN SportsCenter? Please! Hello? Hockey!
  • I never saw Nancy Grace before, but I recently witnessed 2 shows making fun of her and read a scathing article from Stephen King in EW so I watched her tonight. Wow! She's like a stupid, over-generalizing Sandy Clough!
  • The Arizona Cardinals. Do I need to continue? Well, YES I DO! Their debacle on Monday night against Da Bayrz was simply hilarious! (In case you didn't see it, they gave up a 20 point lead in the fourht quarter without giving up an offensive toughdown - we're talking 2 fumble returns for touchdowns and a punt return for a touchdown followed by a missed game-winning field goal.) But the idiots did the same thing last week against the Chiefs! The issue there was - I was the ONLY one who picked them to win that game against the Chiefs! Without THAT meltdown, I would have EASILY won the week in the PAFC Pick 'Em! Then again, I am leading the whole thing. WTF?
  • Studio 60 is slipping in viewers and I'm afraid it's going to get cancelled. I love this show - my favorite on TV right now! The only hope is NBC has committed a TON of money into it, so they may just stick with it and hope they cut their losses.
  • The Miami Hurricanes should be booted from college football for 5 years - SMU their asses! Disgusting, pathetic, name it!
  • Remember when the Broncos could score points at will?
  • Remember when you could name more than 2 players on the Avs and they were selling out games and they could win?
  • Remember TV before ridiculous celebrity reality game show things? Is celebrity kangaroo boxing next? Like my boss said, there can't be that many famous kangaroos around!

Tetris anyone?

So, any ideas for Halloween? I'm thinking Pee Wee Herman - that was my goal when I joined LAWL at this time last year. I was even thinking of taking it to Freak Train and doing an interpretive dance to a Megadeth song dressed as Pee Wee Herman. Thoughts?

PAFC Pick 'Em Results - Week 6

Way to go Loren! Nice big week after a, well, crappy one last week.

Heh - I'm still winnin'!

Wacky Video Wednesday!

This is silly (and a little gross) - it's album cover art war! Thanks Collin:

The Average and the Ugly

I’ve been trying to watch way too much TV. Not sure if I’ve got too many shows recorded, or if I just have way too much going on right now. Hey, it's hard to blog after three 10-hour days - take what you can get!

Anyway, I’ve got this for ya:

Ugly Betty - ABC Thursdays

How can anything that involves Selma Hayek have the word ugly in the title? The spicy little hourglass is the producer of this new (to us) comedy from south of the border. America Ferrera plays Betty Suarez, a not so cute (but hardly ugly), awkward girl with braces who stumbles into her dream job of working for a fashion magazine. What Betty doesn’t know is how cutthroat the pompous freaks are that work for and with the magazine.

So far, it’s OK. The pilot is all I’ve seen, but I have the other 2 episodes recorded. Again, I think the dialogue is a little forced. There’s a bit of overacting as well, with the stereotypical gay people and snobby ex-models. Guh!

~O~O~o (For now, with 2 shows to redeem itself)

30 Rock - NBC Wednesdays

Speaking of so-so pilot episodes…

I love Tina Fey – LOVE her! She helped SNL get back on the map, and her film Mean Girls was a lot of fun. But this show certainly didn’t live up to the hype.

Tina writes and stars in this comedy that goes behind the scenes of an SNL type show, where she is the head writer and producer. A new exec comes to the network (Alec Baldwin), and forces her to hire a wacky, in-the-spotlight-for-all-the-wrong-reasons celebrity (Tracy Morgan). Despite a few fun lines, this was WEAK! I know, I need to give it more chances, but so far I'm disappointed.

~O~O (3 strikes and yer out, Tina)

I still have Friday Night Lights to watch, among many favorites that I just don’t have time to get to! I’m hoping for a quiet weekend to get caught up!

Anything y’all like?

Wacky Video Wednesday - 3-fer

Yep, time to freak you out to the 3rd powah!

First, take a gander at 2 new Weird Al videos in CLAYMATION! Um, no, Clay Aiken is not involved:

Canadian Idiot:

Weasel Stomping Day:

And in case that wasn't creepy enough, how about the new Tickle Me Elmo doll? This may give you nightmares:

HOLY CRAP! Mercury is now actually playing the LYRICS to Nth Degree by Morningwood in their commercials! Yep, you can hear "M-O, M-O-R, M-O-R-N-I-N-G W-O-O-D" on network TV today. HAHA! This is like when (insert the company I can't think of right now here) used Should I Stay or Should I Go by the Clash and focused on the "Fruck Yer Mama" part.

PAFC Pick 'Em Results - Week 5

Whoa - a few perfect people! Nichelle and Morgan(a) rocked this week, and we're all in awe! But I'm still winning, or at least tied for first with Marcia. Are you gonna get in this thing or what?

Standings after week 5:
